Corrosion
Corrosion is a natural process that transforms metal into more stable chemical compounds such as oxides, hydroxides or sulfides. It is a chemical or electrochemical reaction that occurs between the metal and the environment, leading to the gradual destruction of the material.
The best-known example of corrosion is rust, an iron oxide that is formed by the reaction of iron with oxygen and moisture.

Corrosion is one of the biggest threats in logistics and transportation, generating significant costs. In addition to expenditures on protective measures, there are additional expenses associated with rework, repair or even complete scrapping of damaged components. Minimizing these losses is crucial to the sustainable and profitable operation of supply chains.
Factors affecting corrosion
Humidity and temperature
Humidity plays a key role in the corrosion process. For many metals, the risk of corrosion increases when the relative humidity exceeds 60%. Particularly dangerous is the phenomenon of condensation, when a cold metal surface comes into contact with warmer, humid air - water then settles on the metal, accelerating the corrosion process.
Duration of exposure
Prolonged exposure to unfavorable environmental conditions, such as high humidity or fluctuating temperatures, significantly increases the risk of corrosion.
Methods to prevent corrosion
- Air transportation
Reducing transit time reduces the risk of corrosion, but this is costly and has a negative impact on the environment. - Protective coatings
The use of oils, greases or other coatings protects the metal from contact with moisture. Unfortunately, these methods require additional cleaning of the surface before subsequent production steps, which increases cost and time. - VCI film
Special volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) packaging provides protection, but is expensive, generates a large amount of plastic waste, and may be insufficient in harsher shipping conditions. - Drying agents
Dehumidifiers are one of the most effective and environmentally friendly solutions. They reduce humidity in the environment, eliminating the main cause of corrosion. They are simpler to apply, more cost-effective and environmentally friendly compared to other methods.
